Massage therapy is a wonderful way to help with aches and pains throughout the body. It can even help people deal with their anxiety and depression. That said, some people are unsure if it is safe to receive massages – especially women who are pregnant. Pregnant women are aware that massages could relieve some of their pain from pregnancy, but some worry if it is safe to do so.

Is It Safe to Get a Massage While Pregnant?

Yes, it is perfectly safe to get a massage while pregnant as long as the right precautions are taken. You should speak with your doctor to make sure it is safe if you have a complicated pregnancy. Along with that, you will need to make sure that your massage therapist has a pregnancy table or pillows to help you lie comfortably on your side.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massages

Pregnancy is beautiful, but it can also be painful and exhausting, delivering symptoms anywhere from swollen legs and feet to extreme back pains. There are many benefits to a pregnancy massage that can help make pregnancy a little easier. Studies have shown that massage therapy done during pregnancy can help the mother in a number of ways. It will reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, and relieve muscle aches and joint pains. It will also improve labor outcomes and newborn health.

Other studies have shown that, when pregnant women receive massages for five weeks, they will find that their hormones and stress levels are regulated. In these studies, cortisol, a stress hormone, dropped significantly in the women, and the levels of dopamine increased. This led to fewer complications for women and their babies during birth. It reduced low birth weight in newborns as well. Massage during pregnancy can also reduce edema, which is the swelling of the joints. Edema is usually due to low blood circulation and pressure on major blood vessels. Getting one will stimulate the body which will increase blood circulation and reduce swelling. Women also experience sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy. Sciatic nerve pain can be debilitating, especially while pregnant. Getting a massage will help the nerve pain and swelling that can occur with sciatica.

Who Should Not Get One?

While getting a massage while pregnant is safe, there are still precautions you should watch out for in some cases. You need to speak with your healthcare provider before getting a one if you have:

  • A high-risk pregnancy
  • Preeclampsia
  • Intense swelling, high blood pressure, or severe headaches
  • Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
  • Recently given birth

In sum, it is safe to get a massage while pregnant, but remember to check first with your healthcare provider if you have had any complications in your pregnancy. Massage can help many symptoms including swelling, aches, and pains, and it can reduce stress. It can help you feel better during pregnancy- so go get a massage!
