Pain and Depression Are Linked

For people suffering from constant aches and sores, there seems to be no method of solace. Chronic pain has been shown, in multiple studies conducted by renowned universities like Harvard or Northwestern, to literally change the way one’s brain functions. In layman’s terms, when a person is suffering from constant pain, certain parts of the brain, particularly those dealing with mood and attention, stay consistently active instead of being regulated to turn “on” and “off” as in a person with normal pain sensitivity.

As a consequence, neural connections and electrical activity become unbalanced, leading patients “with chronic pain [to] have three times the average risk of developing psychiatric symptoms […] ,” according to the Harvard Mental Health Letter. Further problems with appetite, sleep, concentration, memory, and judgment have also been noted as consequences of chronic pain. According to WebMD, “living in constant pain leads nearly a third of people with chronic pain to become clinically depressed.

[Furthermore, about] 75% of people who are being treated for depression report physical symptoms, including pain.”

It appears to be a never-ending cycle.  Pain leads to depression, and depression brings on more pain. Is there a way to break away from the vicious circularity without undergoing invasive surgery, or intoxicating your brain with a host of pharmaceutical drugs chemicals?
