How a Chiropractor Can Help Patients Manage Diabetes
July 8, 2015

Diabetes Management

Due to a combination of poor nutrition and a lack of exercise, diabetes is rapidly becoming an epidemic, with over 26 million Americans affected by this disease. Worse, it is estimated that 37.5% of people born in the year 2000 will suffer from diabetes. Diabetes is the 5th most common cause of death in America, so keeping the disease in check is the most important thing for diabetics to do in order to live a long and healthy life.

Insulin helps transport the energy sustaining compound insulin into your cells. Type II diabetes occurs when a person’s body either can’t make enough insulin or the body can’t use insulin properly; either way, it means that a person’s glucose uptake is reduced, meaning that your blood contains a high amount of glucose. Over time, this glucose buildup can damage your kidneys and heart, leading to other health problems such as kidney failure or a hardening of the arteries.

Diabetes is usually treated with dietary restrictions or medications such as metformin and insulin. While these treatments may help reduce the effects of diabetes, they may have side effects, such as poor overall nutrition or weight gain. Rather than relying on a pill or shot for the rest of your life, consider using chiropractic care to help you mitigate your diabetes while maintaining good nutrition.

You may be asking how chiropractic care can help with manage your diabetes. The answer is simple: chiropractic care focuses on full body treatment rather than just treating the pancreas (the part of the body that produces insulin). Chiropractors believe in treating diabetes by fixing subluxations and by instituting a whole body health plan.

Subluxations

Subluxations occur when vertebrae become slightly misaligned and often causes back pain. In addition to causing back pain, a subluxation also upsets blood and nerve supply from the upper back and neck. This means that internal organs like the pancreas don’t get enough oxygen or nervous input and suffer damage. By correcting subluxations, pancreatic nervous input and blood flow improve. This may cause improved pancreatic function, causing an increase in insulin production and lowering or eliminating the need for a medication regimen.

Whole body health

Often, a patient with diabetes will be told to lose weight in order to slow the progression of the disease. While this is good advice, many patients are unable to follow a diet on their own or diet in a way that reduces their overall health due to a lack of nutrition. Not following proper nutrition guidelines can actually make diabetes worse because it deteriorates total body function.

Chiropractors trained in natural weight loss remedies ensure that patients lose weight quickly and effectively without compromising their health. Because weight loss plans offered through chiropractors are natural and safe, a diabetic can participate in the program and feel confident that poor nutrition will not further harm their body.
